I don't follow your logic here. Why do you feel that VFP's misfortune should also spell misfortune for VB? Both langauges have been on very different paths.

By the time VFP was introduced in 1995, xbase was dead. I think the xBase Standards Committee shut down in 1994. No, a lack of standardization is one factor in the death of xBase in my opinion. As far as VFP, the issue probably has to do more with being a perceived competitor to VB....and VB won.

Simply put, VB has been on a path to win. VFP - despite the efforts of the VFP team and its solid architecture - has been on a path to lose.
