>I once had my wallet stolen and another time I lost it (very long story), and both times had over $150 on me. So I never carry any significant cash on me. If my wallet is gone, I can call my card company and cancel any ATM purchases, and I don't owe a dime (not more than $50, but rather nothing at all). I've always figured that with card readers all over the place, there's just no reason to carry cash.
I think that's the key. I won't use a debit card for purchases. I use a credit card (paid in full each month) for most purchases, and cash or check (fewer and fewer) for the rest.
Why no debit card? It started because debit cards didn't have the protections of credit cards, but also I just don't like the idea of vendors being able to reach into my bank account, even through a third party.
