>Known for a high level of integrity among Kansas basketball fanatics, evidently. Did you actually read what he said? (Maybe you didn't, since you once again pruned the quoteback to fit your argument). He sounded like a lawyer in his opening argument -- all so innocent, all so long ago, "but we have rules" -- total phony.
>
>You just want the new stud on the team and are happy to look the other way. Which is what I meant about the hypocrisy of the NCAA

>
>Mike, WTF is your problem now???? Exactly WHAT did Self say that made him sound like a "lawyer"??? What makes him sound like a "phony"?
>
>Mike, I follow NCAA sports far more heavily than you do, and I know that Bill Self is one of the most respected head coaches and mentors in the country.
>
>And by the way, if you want to talk about men who KNOWINGLY broke rules, you haven't said a word about Bruce Pearl (head coach at Tennessee), who KNOWINGLY made inappropriate recruitment contacts and then admitted that he lied to the NCAA during an investigation. Pearl got roughly the same suspension.
>
>Of course I wanted Selby on the team. Who wouldn't????? How am I looking the other way???? Selby was fined and has to sit out 9 games. (And by the way, you never acknowledged you were wrong about him "taking money", it was a more complicated situation than that).
>
>You're rambling and ranting, which begs the question on whether you're under the influence of anything again...

Answering your last question first, no.

Here is the quote from Self again:

"I really am proud of Josh," Self said. "Now, I may be mad at him tomorrow but I'm really proud of him because this was a situation -- get here, can't go to school then you can go to school, can't practice. After you can practice, can't practice any more. He's dealt with several things that would really make a young man's mind cluttered. And he's been mature about this. I think he's really handled it pretty well, and his family has."

Self said he agreed that Selby hadn't done anything wrong, but "we do have rules.

"And the NCAA stated even though longtime acquaintance, even though a friend of the son, even though a mentor, there are still some situations that happened long before he got here that Josh admitted to that he's going to have to deal with. But he'll handle it like a man. And we'll look forward to having him out here."

We report, you decide ;-)

Agreed about Bruce Pearl. There are worse than him but he'll do. There are basketball fans in Illinois who are still steamed at him for diming the U of I basketball program for recruiting violations. (They didn't dispute the violations, they were just mad at getting caught).

The school I am more than irritated at these days is Notre Dame. Nothing new there, but they have been outdoing themselves with off the field shenanigans. A month or so ago a student videographer was killed during practice. He was 50 feet in the air in a flimsy tower. It blew over during gusty winds and killed the kid, who was 19. IMO it wasn't just an unfortunate accident for two reasons. First, what was he doing up there in the first place? I remember that day and it was one of the windiest days in this part of the country in a long time, with winds gusting from 35 to 60 mph. Other college football teams in the area either cancelled practice that day or practiced indoors. ND went ahead as scheduled, and nobody said hey, maybe it's not a good idea putting someone up in the air on that contraption. God help us if we don't have one practice on videotape. Even more offensive was the reaction from the university, which was a mixture of stonewalling and denial. The athletic director -- actually a lawyer IIRC -- was notoriously quoted saying he had been on the field just before practice and it was nothing out of the ordinary. (There was a great reaction to that from a South Bend weatherman).

Now today's paper has a front page story about a 19 year old student at St. Mary's, which is sort of the sister school of Notre Dame (across the street), who was sexually assaulted by a Notre Dame football player and killed herself not long afterward. Again, complete stonewalling. Read this and see if it doesn't make you sick to your stomach.
