Hi Jeff,
Your first statement above is exactly why I keep pushing (most call it whining) about VFP's target at mid-tier - I too prefer to "master" one language, mainly because of personal limitations.
I have been through at least 5 languages so far, but only one at any given time. And I agree that related technologies also have to be learned and that that takes enough added time as to preclude even mediocrity at a second (current) language.
