I love the way people quote doctors as to what is "good" or "bad" for you. If a doctor - doctors, for say, 30 years. . . they call it "practicing." I think that is a true statement. The number 3 cause of death in the US is medical mistakes. . . or you could say . . . the results of practicing. It seems every few years the pendulum swings on whether or not coffee is good or bad. Lately, it has been said to help fight cancer and diabetes. Previously, it was said to make you more likely to have a heart attack. Both of my grandmothers cooked with bacon grease, lard and butter. They made wonderful dishes that everyone in the family loved, but alas, they should have known bette.r All those "bad" things they ate did them in. Of course, one missed living to be 100 by 2 months, and the other by 4 years....

Eat, drink and be Merry (not Mary or Shirley), for tomorrow we die!

>>Fruit, vegetables and alcohol are snubbed for the most part — with light beer and raw carrots being possible exceptions.

>>I actually like raw carrots much better than cooked carrots. Go figure.
>>
>>With the exception of Amstel Light, I strongly dislike light beer.
>>
>>I do the daily apple/banana thing....I'm not as good on the vegetables, so I eat carrots frequently.
>>
>>I REFUSE to eat a tomato. Can't stand them. Sorry, I know you like them.

>Raw carrots are much better for you, so that's all to the good. Steamed mini carrots are also very healthy.

>When I was growing up, and probably when you were, too, the basic approach to vegetables was to boil the daylights out of them. That's certainly the way my mom did it. There go the nutrients along with the water and the end result is especially satisfying to those who like their veggies the consistency of baby food.

>The one vegetable I truly can't stand, however prepared, is beets.

>Interesting article in the NY Times the other day about the resurrection of sweet potatoes. As recently as a couple of years ago they got as much respect as Rodney Dangerfield, baked under marshmallows once a year only to be forgotten until the next Thanksgiving. The article said they are enjoying a renaissance, especially in North Carolina, the leading producer of sweet potatoes.
