>>Why do I stay? I have almost total control over the product. I'm not going to get that kind of freedom in a larger company. What interests me in consulting is keeping the freedom but getting decent pay for it. Of course, I still won't have benefits, but my husband has excellent insurance so that's not so bad.

There are two programmers here, Bob and me. He does work on version 5, which is the one currently trying to be sold. Version 6 I've done completely by myself so far, and it will probably stay that way since Bob is working on a Taxi Manager and internal programs. I wrote most of the docs for 5. I'll write all the docs and the help for 6. I'm also tech support. Granted, we only have 5 customers, but they tend to call a lot with the software being so buggy.
We've got my boss, the VP, who is the salesperson. Thank goodness I don't have to take care of that end!
I personally wouldn't sell version 5. But the company needs income to support the development of 6.
