>I think every person on the planet likes the idea of being taken care of by the government, but that system just does not work. Are liberals in a perpetual search for the balancing point where just enough people are working to support those who cannot or don't? That's very close to charity at the point of a gun. The more to the left politics go, the more likely the government is to fail. Pelosi seems to be quite far to the left. In fact her stance caused some of her own party to not vote for her as leader (or whatever she is now) The left's ideas work well until they run out of other people's money, which they did. It is impossible to spend themselves out of debt. The only outcome is being in a deeper mess than when they started, which is what happened. So, I'll take the new (R) speaker over lightning lips Pelosi every time.

Grady, does Canada's political system provide a similar amount of entertainment as that provided by the US system? What i found humerous about the talkingpointsmemo story was that a Texas GOP rep did not get sworn in when he was supposed to. Instead he was at a fundraiser for another GOP rep on the grounds of the capital (that is a no no). Instead, they both "took" the oath while watching a TV that was broadcasting the real swearing in. Ironically, their fubar shut down a house rules committee meeting. The next day, during the reading of the Constitution, a birther in the congressional gallery screams "Except Obama, except Obama, help us Jesus!" when the citizenship rqmts of the US president were read out. You cannot make this stuff up.

Regarding your comments, i find it odd the amount of hyperventilating directed at the Obama admin for considering letting the higher income bracket tax rates return (as "planned" by the GOP via the rate expiration specified in the bill) to the Clinton era rates. I dont recall the same (tax-related) vitriol directed at Clinton for those same rates. Likewise, i dont recall the same vitriol directed at Bush when the unfunded medicare part D plan was enacted. Or the unfunded, off-the-books funding from the Chinese for our Iraq and Afghan wars. Not by the GOP anyway. Instead of paying for those initiatives, the Bush admin pushed tax cuts. Political party attempts to address the deficit is a very selective endevour that both parties engage/avoid depending on the day. As Dick Cheney said, "deficits dont matter".

What spending are you referring to?
