You can use a time warp at the top (from the left panel) to go back. You can also use a Calendar feature. Also, for each particular thread you can use view whole thread to see the thread with all messages or view starting from particular message.

In other words, there is a lot of the flexibility.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
