They were probably displayed in the top frame, but you didn't actually click on them and read them. If they display in the top frame in the treeview, they won't display the next time you login. I think they are considered "read" even though you didn't click on each message in the top frame and actually view the contents of the message.

I've had a problem where I open the UT but don't get the opportunity to read the messages in the top pane and then if I exit and go back in, I don't see those messages again unless "I go back" by one of the means of doing that.

I wish it worked differently: only consider "read" those messages I actually view, not all the ones listed in the top frame when I login. Or create a user setting that would allow the user to determine whether messages displayed in the top pane are considered "read" for the next time you login or if you have to view them for them to be considered "read."
