Honestly, there are only a few areas where I wouldn't feel comfortable driving around at night. Detroit is not Michigan in general (and honestly the city isn't that bad), and Plymouth is really close to some nice areas like Canton, or Northville and Novi (a bit further North). I wouldn't let that be a deciding factor for you - it's really not an issue.
