It was my first real 'immersion' language - learned originally over 40 years ago - and there were a couple after that that were wildly different ( Thai, Lao, Bahasa etc. ). In those places kept using Turkish words when I was scrambling in a conversation. Later I went back to Turkey and would blurt out sentences with Thai words thrown in that would leave the Turks really scratching their heads. <s>

I friend of mine did that said it was very hard.

My sister effectively did it when she moved to France by deliberately avoiding English people till she had mastered French and could keep up a conversation in a bar or cafe.
