The difference between Stonefield Query (and FoxFire) and Crystal Reports or SQL Reporting Services is the target audience. The former are intended for end-users to create their own reports while the latter are for developers or IT staff. That's not exactly true regarding SSRS Report Builder (part of SSRS), a product that wasn't very good until recently with Report Builder 3.0, is targeted towards non-developer types. There's a large body of workers between developers and the user types you mentioned - and that's information workers - and they can be fairly productive with Report Builder.
(And even for that matter, there actually are a few information workers out there who use SSRS....yes, power users who have BIDS and create SSRS reports, with a little setup help from developers).
