Viv,

Android grew >880% during 2010 and overtook Symbian. If you review the above link from March 2010, Android's extraordinary performance becomes apparent.

There have been suggestions here that the Android figures must be fake. There does seem to some question about the math, with neutral commentators questioning whether Android has indeed overtaken Symbian or is just behind it. If just behind, then by now an 880% growth rate has pushed Android past Symbian, which now is being dropped.

People who complain about MS's abandonment of tech might like to consider firms who hitched their wagon to Symbian.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
