Glad you got it fixed. Just yesterday I had to fix update problems with 2 client workstations (XP SP3). On both of them, all or some .Net updates were failing, and all Silverlight updates on both were failing.

The solution was drastic, but didn't take too long:

- Remove all .Net framework versions with the .Net Framework Cleanup Tool
- Then reinstall the frameworks in the following order:
- Reinstall .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 (which also installs 2.0 etc.)
- Reinstall .Net Framework 1.1
- Reinstall .Net Framework 1.1 SP1
- Reinstall .Net Framework 4
- Delete 2 Silverlight-related registry keys and the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Silverlight folder
- Reinstall Silverlight
- Manually run Windows/Microsoft Update to get latest updates for all the above

All the above takes about 1.5 hours and 6 reboots IIRC.
