I have a very complete book antology from Borges in English (I read him in Spanish first, I never read the poems though) so I am covered, but I agree is not easy to warm up on him. I read most of Vargas Llosa earlier books but my favourite is "La guerra del fin del mundo" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_of_the_End_of_the_World, which coincidentally was the last one I read from him.

The free space issue is entirely familiar to me. There is a spring cleaning going on here, which is expected to last some time.

I read La Guerra del fin Mundo way back when. I will have to give it another shot on your recommendation.
