>If I say it's a movement of white people and they are in fact white people it's not racist. It's an observation of fact.

>Mike, when someone has such incredibly limited scope, I suppose it's understandable (with a little help from Mr. Cuervo) that seeing pink elephants might lead one to connect the dots and think that it's all about color.

If only it were that simple. I am working on it. After nothing happening at all for months I have had four good leads recently. One of them offered me a job on Monday but I declined. It was straight 1099 work at a low rate, no benefits, and a 50 mile drive each way. I probably should have taken it anyway until something better came along. Banging around the house is the worst thing I could be doing, even though I spend a fair amount of productive time learning .NET. (Which is doing me absolutely no good without work experience).

There was another strong prospect which actually should have worked out. Listen to this. I interviewed with the owner of a software house in southeastern Wisconsin and it went well. He followed up with an email asking if I was looking to work from home (no) and what I was looking for in salary. I replied to his email, then heard nothing. I figured the salary was way out of range for the area and more or less forgot about it. On Tuesday I followed up, asking if it was the salary. He said no, he never received my email. (I double checked and it was definitely sent). He said he figured I had lost interest so he hired his second choice. When it rains it pours.

A third job looked like a sure thing, even though the work looked like it would be awful. (Huge FoxPro system(s), no documentation, original developer long gone, the last guy ran screaming into the night). But the salary was great and I was sure there would be an offer. The owner asked me what I wanted to make, didn't bat an eye, and even asked me what day I could start. Then he hired someone else. They have no DBA and he had another candidate with some DBA skills.

I don't need to leave the UT. Isolation is not good for me. I just need to behave myself, and stay away when temptation is too strong for me.

I will apologize to Mike C. That's exactly the kind of stupid, aggressive stuff alcohol brings out in me. Yes, I know, it's totally senseless. I am not using this as an excuse but people who don't have the disease don't understand what it's like.

For that matter I don't mean half the things I say to you. You have said some pretty strong things to me, though, and I tend to strike back when attacked.

The good news is some people do beat it. That's the main reason I still go to AA even though I don't believe in half the principles. It's good just to be around alcoholics who are living sober (you never stop being an alcoholic but you can live sober). I haven't given up. Even now it's not like I'm staggering around drunk all the time. I routinely go a week or two without a drink, then backslide. Obviously on some level, probably subconscious, it's more important to me to drink than to stay sober all the time.
