>>The 19-member commission includes former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and former U.S. official George Schultz, who held Cabinet posts under Presidents Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon, former U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker; former presidents of Mexico, Brazil and Colombia; writers Carlos Fuentes and Mario Vargas Llosa; British business mogul Richard Branson; and the Greek prime minister.

>>What I'd like to know is why the former presidents of Mexico, Brazil, & Colombia didn't bring this up before.

>>Supposedly the report is 24 pages - I'd love to read it but so far haven't found it.

>Mario Vargas Llosa -- I'm impressed! ;-) (As it happens I am rereading "Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter").

>Pot should definitely be legalized. It has been part of our culture for about 50 years now. You would be hard pressed to find a high school student who isn't aware of it and hasn't tried it. Personally I have not taken a toke in over 30 years, not long after college, but that's not because I consider it evil. It's just something I did in a place and time. I don't consider the kids who try it along with their friends or the adults who choose to use it recreationally to be bad seeds (so to speak). For sure it is less of a menace to society than alcohol. Besides, we have the donut and potato chip industries to consider.

All in all I agree, but there is the danger of driving under the influence, which is less controllable than with alcohol, as there is no linear degression. Also todays pot is not our pot, by several generations of careful gardening, if the reports I read are true.

thomas
