I heard Styx live early this century and they were great. They've sounded better in concert the last several years, after booting Dennis DeYoung from the band. Tommy Shaw and JY might be senior citizens by now, but they can still rock.
Styx did some decent album work a long time ago - the Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight albums were good, and even earlier albums (Crystal Ball, Equinox, Serpent is Rising) were good even by today's standards.
But Dennis DeYoung ruined the band's reputation with all the pop ballad silliness...and then there was the entire "Mr Roboto" stuff. In their 1983 tour following their album, their own fans were often booing them in concern.
