>I have had similar thoughts. Let's face it, though, Chatter is a lot more compelling on a human level than "Why is my Textbox background color always yellow when disabled?" I read the tech threads and pick up some knowledge, especially in the SQL Server and .NET sections. But it's Chatter that keeps me coming back.
I don't know. I like the fact that Chatter is available to everyone here. I like reading Humor section (BTW, I initiated it being a separate category in the Chatter) and some other things. But I found it took too much time and usually the topics are that I know nothing about or didn't form an opinion, so I found it better to shut off to not distract. Also, it may sound weird, but I enjoy only reading tech. forums (as of late, I'm a big fun of reading/participating in Transact-SQL forum in MSDN). The only 'Chatter' stuff I'm reading is my husband's LifeJournal.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
