>>Of course it is the 'best system' and nice 'way of life'
>>(As long as you get some third party/country sucker to chip inn for the bills) But what do you do when (like in every other Ponzy scheme) you run out of suckers ?

>>Of course, there is also the alternate point of view that was well stated by Maggie Thatcher:

>>The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.
>>
>>There is also this quote from the parable of The Grand Inquisitor from Chapter 5 of The Brothers Karamazov (Fyodor Dostoevsky):
>>
>>In the end they will lay their freedom at our feet, and say to us, "Make us your slaves, but feed us."

>Your admiration of Thatcher defines you.

>The best thing about Thatcher was that she left the Tories unelectable for a decade.
>She was also largely responsible for the destruction of UK manufacturing and making the UK a centre for casino banking.

>I look forward to the day the Thatcher era is re examined and defined for what it was . An economic disaster. The wholesale destruction of industry with no clear plan about what was to replace it.

I don't claim to be an expert on this or in fact on anything related to economic issues ( unlike those in and out of government who claim to be but aren't ) but I have read a lot about Mrs. Thatcher both pro and con. One of the most interesting was by Claire Berlinski, a rather fascinating woman in her own write. ( yes, I know you can dismiss her by characterizing her as a right wing ideolog of some stripe - as opposed to the objective editorial staff of the Guardian or the Daily Worker <g> ) but I would be more interested in rebuttal to her salient points. In any case, the book is a good read, as is her fiction and her book on Europe.

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
