>>>I think (guessing) that many conservatives (like Marcia and myself) would be in favor of giving amnesty to all illegals currently in the country. If - big if - the government would enforce the borders. Otherwise, the amnesty will be nothing more than a magnet to others to break the law.

>>OTOH, as long as the corporations can buy the laws by which they are financially rewarded for exporting production and whatnot to China etc, local employers will be fighting an uphill battle, competing with cheap labor. Their only recourse is to have at least part of their business untaxed, and at least part of their workforce being paid at Chinese levels. To do that, they have only two choices: outsource the labor to a prison (that's cheaper than Chinese, but not easy to get) or hire off the books.

>>Once the playing field is level, they wouldn't have the incentive to do this. But for many, this is a way to stay afloat. Just look at Manassas, VA, where the city has successfully raided local businesses who hired illegals, and illegals went (elsewhere, probably other counties). A number of businesses just closed after that - some for being unable to get workers at prices they could afford, some for losing customers.

>I agree with you on the point of the corporations buying the laws and exporting tons of jobs to China. And they buy the laws by paying off politicians who are corrupted to the core. One solution I see is Term Limits. And we have weak presidents, one after the other. Bush was weak and Obama even weaker. We need a president who will on the first day of his/her presidency will commit to do what he believes to be good for the country, stop taking money from lobbies, and not campaign for the second term, leaving it up to the voters decide simply on his/her the record. There was a segment on 60 minutes a week or two weeks ago on how much Obama is spending (time and money) on campaigning instead of doing his job. Oh yes, I forgot, he spends good deal of time on playing golf too.

All politicians have to spend time on campaigning. Most of them hate it. It's just a requirement of the system we have.

To me term limits is one of those ideas that sounds appealing on the surface and is not a good idea. Sure, there are some who should be weeded out quickly and are re-elected because of the power of incumbency. But it's nonsensical to throw out the baby with the bathwater. There really are some good ones who are doing a good job for their constituents and their country. Would you have had Miles Davis thrown out of jazz 8 years after he released his first record? Closer to home, would you want Tom Brady to be forced into retirement after 8 years in the NFL? One size fits all is not a good solution.
