Lutz, Servoy "shields" you from having to actually dive into or know anything about Java, but its there in the background (and can be used if you so desire). As you stated, you would use more Javascript than actual Java code normally if desired.

Here is a couple write ups on Servoy in eWeek (little old but good overview) that gives you an idea of how it works and how it is setup to shield you from Java, etc.

Note: I don't think the articles mention this, but Servoy can direclty access Fox tables through its included driver.
