>>>Just keep in mind that we didn't all make it to adulthood. That's the perspective you need whether you're talking about bike helmets, child car seats or child labor laws.

>>>Kids have always died in childhood, some from things we can't prevent, and some from things we can. As a society, we decide what our tolerance is for the latter.

>And an unfortunate by-product of these laws is that we end up protecting stupid people from their own stupidity. Then they go find other stupid people and produce even stupider people - and costing all of us more money. I don't remember where I saw it, but it was a list of what it costs to put the warning labels, stickers, etc on products and the one thing I remember was it cost (at the time) about $2 for the "Do NOT Use in the Tub/Shower" sticker on a hair dryer. Do we really need to warn people about that? Or that hot coffee might be HOT?

>But, then again, as a dear friend always used to say "Common sense isn't"
Last year they took twelve local 5 year olds (boys and girls) and sat them down around a table. Each was given a prescription bottle with a “child proof top”. Each bottle had a different top representing the variety available. In less than 30 seconds all twelve children had opened his/her bottle. The adults are still trying to open one of those bottles. :)
