You don't need to, but that's probably a requirement designed by someone up there. The sound is supposed to help the candidate make a choice (or the sound IS the question), however, if I was a candidate, I'd be deurinated (royally, republicly and anarchically at the same time) for having to wait for the sound to finish while my time is being counted. I'd probably waste more time trying to circumvent the sound than I'd spend thinking of the answer.
