It doesn't matter where the ball is as long as it's in fair territory. That was an easy play for Holliday. Hardly even took 'ordinary' effort on his part. The fact that he skittered off at the last second doesn't change anything. I agree with the ump on this one.
From the furor it aroused, I thought I was the only one who agreed with the call. It appeared to me that the infielder had settled under the ball; was prepared to make the catch (which fits what I know of as the definition for the rule); and veered away when he was called off by the outfielder
