>>I just watched the play. That was the right call. The infield fly rule doesn't require the ball to be in the infield. It only requires that an infielder can make the play with ordinary effort. It doesn't matter where the ball is as long as it's in fair territory. That was an easy play for Holliday. Hardly even took 'ordinary' effort on his part. The fact that he skittered off at the last second doesn't change anything. I agree with the ump on this one.

>From the furor it aroused, I thought I was the only one who agreed with the call. It appeared to me that the infielder had settled under the ball; was prepared to make the catch (which fits what I know of as the definition for the rule); and veered away when he was called off by the outfielder

Which part of the word infield don't you guys understand? ;-)

At least the Cardinals won. Last year at this time I was working at a client in St. Louis and had the good fortune to be there for their World Series run. I have never been particularly for or against the Cardinals -- being a Brewers fan, more often against -- but had always heard that they have very good fans. Knowledgeable, polite, and passionate about their Cards. It was cool getting to see it in person. And that sixth game of the WS will remain a classic in baseball history. The Rangers were literally on the dugout steps ready to storm the field. Whoops.
