I have never used IP from VFP (anything that can use an IP socket is all you need). But writing a daemon on linux is easy stuff. Write a program (C, perl, shell whatever) that reads stdin as input, and writes stdout as output. Then put it in your /etc/inetd.conf and /etc/services files. restart inetd, and you have a daemon running on your network, on a port you specify. :)
If you need more info, contact me privately.
