I tried your suggestion an Christian's too. Just got stuck at some point.

If you have the time, I captured all screens of my last (of many!) attempt to install MySQL, you can check that at some point (in the Configuration step) it shows an error and doesn't install at all.

I really don't know why it doesn't work. Also checked http://www.sistemabasico.com.br/2011/06/30/instalando-o-mysql-5-5-8-no-windows-7/ for the steps to install, but the screens are completelly diferent.
