You seem to have missed the point. In the immediacy of the Newtown massacre the initial reporting was flawed at best and falsified at worst. It is the latest example of the worst aspect of the news media. Namely, the desire to be 1st to report, trumps the accuracy of what's being reported.

There are several recent examples of the media leaping to report something during major events, anything, regardless of its basis in reality (see systemic rapes in the Superdome, the existence of a "trench coat mafia", identity of Atlanta Olympic bomber). The argument to wait until the facts are known before commenting is valid and would be refreshing. Of course, agenda driven politicians are not interested in facts, only in getting money, power and above all re-elected and for that they must pander to their supporters regardless of how crass it is to "not let a crisis go to waste".

FYI: The violent crime rate in the US is at it's lowest level since the early 70s and if the trend continues will approach historic lows sooner rather than later.
