They erected checkpoints at neuralgic streets and bridges - as that was before internet and mobile phone,
avoidance was a matter of seeing the checkpoint at a point when not already in single direction lane.
As to professionalism: I was not happy with Uzi pointed at me as the driver,
knowing very well from service time they had a tendency to go off by itself or minimal jostling.
But not really the situation to argue with the guy holding the potential noise maker.

They caught the most of first main group in less than 2 months, but kept up with controls
at slower pace. About 3 dozen killed by RAF - but across about 20 years that is not that high,
showing by the reaction that they had indeed touched a nerve.
