I'm not sure what you are doing with the GUI but if I didn't need a data interface (bizobjects as in Dabo) I'd consider using pyQT. QT is such a nice graphic lib (soon to support smartphones, tablets) and has graphing tools. Of course if you don't need anything fancy or are more comfortable with wxPython use it.

With 50K to convert I'd contact Paul McNett or Larry Long they both created a simple VFP to python converters (without any controls such as buttons etc.). That will help in getting started. BTW both of those guys abandoned the converters because they felt it was better to use python thinking. I played with Larry's solution and it worked well. I broke up the VFP code into small files and converted. It worked. Once working I just rewrote the code.

BTW I don't like the word 'expert' because I have some knowledge within a domain does NOT mean I have all knowledge of the domain.
