>>So I created a blog page on Wordpress and just created my first post on multitasking. I know there are many articles on that topic, but I tried to create a concise description how it affects specifically a software programmer's productivity.

>Lot of truth in it. 2 points:
>1) I personally am better at thinking (esp. complex structures) when not tied to desk or chair, but moving.
>Not running or dancing, wlaking slowly without aim. Tested. Works *for me*. Is some form of multitasking which is beneficial for me ;-)

Couldn't agree more! Last month I let someone install an additional workspace in my office, where I can work standing on a shelf on which I put my laptop. This allows me to move more freely around and get my brains working, and at the same time it helps keeping my circulation running. I really recommend this for anyone who is sitting everyday 8 hours on their desk.

>2) In programming it is dangerously easy to become overfixated or too close to the problem.
>Switching tasks, not to "do more", but to get conscious thought pointed elsewhere often heps me by allowing subconscious to offer needed kick in the butt. Running or driving is even better - for me.

Also true, no doubt about this. In some cases a good night sleep does wonder, and you wake up solving a problem you couldn't crack for hours.

>Coming from a guy often looking at his phone, and after seeing the number not always answering. Clever people then suppressing showing their number will find I will answer such calls even less. And cell phone is allowed often to recuperate by switching off...
