The project files are not encrypted. You can open them up in a text editor and see what files are involved, and then view them manually. It should be a reasonable process to also parlay them into some format that can be used to replicate the files in use in another tool.
Also, try downloading Visual Studio 2008 Express to see if it will open the solution or project files. I can't remember for sure if this worked. If not, then please note that this is a side-effect of Microsoft and their proprietary software model, that they purposefully break compatibility between versions to keep people moving along with them, rather than sticking with an old stand by that is a real workhorse. I still use VS2008, for example, not even 2010, because it's lighter weight and very stable.
