Rick,
I have OE set as my default email client and Simple MAPI client, OE is configured to logon if there is no available connection. It's also set to immediately deliver messages in it's outbox.
As far as reading only the "new" messages look at the MAPIMessages.FetchUnreadOnly property. You have to call the Fetch() method then iterate through the MsgIndex to get each message.
