How to setup and implement Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 and more - Thursday, August 15th, 2013 at 18h00
Detroit Area Fox User Group (DAFUG) presents:
Bo Durban of Moxie Data, Inc. will be sharing his experiences with:
1) "How to setup and implement Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012"
Microsoft has made their Hyper-V core available for FREE as a stand-alone server. This makes a great platform for managing virtualized servers AND workstations from a scalable, fast, low cost infrastructure. It is ideal for creating virtual test environments for software developers without having to manage a lot of hardware and backups.
I want to share some of the many benefits you can gain from this type of environment. As well as how to get past most of the initial learning curve so you can start taking advantage of this powerful technology today. I am hooked and have committed to using this technology for all future server and test environments.
2) "Tools and Tips for Working With Large SQL Server Data Sets"
Going from working with 10s of thousands of records to 100s of millions of records can be a shock to your system… literally and physically (face in palm). You have been working with databases for years, how hard can it be? Add a few indexes, normalize your data… I got this… no problem.
Many seemingly trivial tasks can mistaking be assumed “obvious”… but what do you do when you have to import and de-dup 500k records into a table every morning and it takes 4-5 hours to complete before you can run the morning reports? What if you need to migrate a 600GB table to a new database or modify its structure and it’s been running for 12 hours and you don’t know when it will finish? What do you do when that form you developed on your workstation opens in 2 seconds, but at the client takes about 5 minutes and you already added all the appropriate indexes?
These are real problems that paying clients want fixed. You have to look not only at the data, but at the hardware, network, file structure, and understand what’s happening under the SQL hood to know how to deal with it. I will share my experiences and some tools I put together to hopefully minimize your SQL growing pains.
3) Anything else people want to talk about.
Are you interested in presenting to DAFUG? Show off something cool in software development you believe your peers might be interested in hearing about? We are always looking for volunteers and topics.
