That specific page details on the creation of the Registry key need in Windows 8.1 to achieve the same:

This works for C$ now. However, this Registry setting has removed my D: drive to be shown as it was before. I will have to search more on this one as for as long as it does not show in Windows Explorer as a drive, I cannot map it.
