Yeah, my understanding is most injuries and deaths in pileups like that are people getting out of their vehicles "prematurely".

I'm thinking the only "safe" place in a pileup like that is upstream of it. Not off to the sides, that's for sure. In or behind it - only if there's at least a couple of (preferably jackknifed) semis blocking the road from other semis.

Visibility couldn't have been that bad if the camera got as good a view as it did. Amazing that some oncoming drivers didn't even slow down. Probably texting.
