>Yeah, my understanding is most injuries and deaths in pileups like that are people getting out of their vehicles "prematurely".

>I'm thinking the only "safe" place in a pileup like that is upstream of it. Not off to the sides, that's for sure. In or behind it - only if there's at least a couple of (preferably jackknifed) semis blocking the road from other semis.

>Visibility couldn't have been that bad if the camera got as good a view as it did. Amazing that some oncoming drivers didn't even slow down. Probably texting.

I did notice that once the WalMart truck stopped everyone else (from behind) slowed down - or, they could have just cut the tape before the car piled into the back of the semi and ripped in half.

Texting, talking on the phone, shaving, eating - could have been any (or all) of those as a contributing factor, but the most was probably the "I know what I'm doing and can drive perfectly fine in these conditions" attitude

Down here, we get a lot of that attitude from people that moved from up North (where we have REAL winters!) anytime we have ice. Looks like snow, but it's not Saw quite a few "Why don't you southern drivers get out of our way and let us show you how to drive" comments on FB from transplanted Yankees. I managed to restrain myself from answering "My Yankee relatives would drive anywhere in the snow - but they stayed HOME in the ice"
