>>>I 'specially loved the people getting out of their cars to stand in the open lane while cars are careening towards them
>>
>>Yeah, my understanding is most injuries and deaths in pileups like that are people getting out of their vehicles "prematurely".
>>
>>I'm thinking the only "safe" place in a pileup like that is upstream of it. Not off to the sides, that's for sure. In or behind it - only if there's at least a couple of (preferably jackknifed) semis blocking the road from other semis.
>>
>>Visibility couldn't have been that bad if the camera got as good a view as it did. Amazing that some oncoming drivers didn't even slow down. Probably texting.
>
> I did notice that once the WalMart truck stopped everyone else (from behind) slowed down - or, they could have just cut the tape before the car piled into the back of the semi and ripped in half.
>
>Texting, talking on the phone, shaving, eating - could have been any (or all) of those as a contributing factor, but the most was probably the "I know what I'm doing and can drive perfectly fine in these conditions" attitude
>
>Down here, we get a lot of that attitude from people that moved from up North (where we have REAL winters!) anytime we have ice. Looks like snow, but it's not Saw quite a few "Why don't you southern drivers get out of our way and let us show you how to drive" comments on FB from transplanted Yankees. I managed to restrain myself from answering "My Yankee relatives would drive anywhere in the snow - but they stayed HOME in the ice"

The WalMart driver was the only one who did the right thing, that basically ended the incident. Really, needed that truck plus another in the other lane ASAP. Note to potential Good Samaritans: if you're driving anything not as tall as a semi, don't park beside a semi like that with the idea of protecting the downstream crash scene. Anyone coming too fast will just avoid the semi and hit you instead, you're painting a target on your bumper.
