Think of site.css as a starting point. They picked one value that works most of the time. The idea is you edit that file to make the widths what you want.

One point that got me puzzled (I asked in my initial question) is why would they have a rule in Site.css that every Input should be 300px long. I simply don't see why this has to be set so globally in any .css file.
