Yes, the recovery model setting determines whether the transaction log is backed up and how the DB can be restored.
I usually determine it by looking at the properties of the DB with SSMS.
You can do in TSQL this way.
SELECT name AS [Database Name],
recovery_model_desc AS [Recovery Model]
FROM sys.databases
GO
