As far as what to use - I used to work on Macs in an RDBMS called 4th Dimension - it did have some neat stuff, but it's not xbase. It is fully "plug-n-play" client server however, supports multiple threads, and is cross-platform. I haven't looked at it in years, so I don't know what they've done, if anything, about OOP, OLE, etc. If I were programming for a PRIMARILY Mac shop that maybe had a few PCs and no intention of changing, I might look at it again.
