Kevin,

IME progress in the real world isn't determined by huge lists of pro or anti arguments. As the scientists say, "the animal is always right" meaning that giant missives are as nothing if the animal does something different. In this case, seems to me the big story is the rapidity with which a semblance of usability was restored. Which is not good news for those who want IT to be about massive projects and prolonged durations: as I noted, the days of the highly paid efficient journeyman/person judged by results may be upon us. Which is as it should be- technology is supposed to drive down cost and automate repetitive tasks, not bloat everything up and lock it in.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
