PACKing tables should not be part of normal application flow. It's separate function which should be performed by system administrator preferably directly on server. You can avoid index problem by 'shredding' primary/candidate keys, e.g. if you have candidate key on some character field, then change key value by inserting some never using '^' first character when you delete record.
