>Regarding languages; about 4 months ago I started learning French. I love learning it but it is very complicated; the spelling of the words has very little to do with how you pronounce them. So I say, wouldn't the world be better off if everybody spoke English?!

If everyone had spoken English we wouldn't have a language :-}
It's all bastardised Viking, French, Anglo-Saxon, Gaelic etc.

If you're learning French have you come across the Michel Thomas CDs (search it on Amazon) ?
Best way to get to speak the language - no emphasis on grammar or spelling.
He makes an interesting observation : 90% of French verbs are identical to English except for pronunciation, Say the English equivalent with a French accent and the chances are it will work. But of course the most commonly used verbs and nouns are the exceptions :-{
