SQL Server 2012 was never able to get installed after that, I had to switch to SQL Server 2014 which is able to get installed in such situation, after SQL Server 2012 was working ok until that date, which forced me to consider moving to SQL Server 2014 because my database were suddently always going into recovery mode after a while, which I now have also in SQL Server 2014 - see thread #1602172

I do not know what to try now but this is affecting my entire operation. My account is part of the Administrator group. However, in Windows 8.1, this is no longer sufficent or pratically does not serve for anything as that OS does not want anymore to be admin now.

Is it possible you're low on free space on C:, or that you have a quota set which is nearly or completely filled?

Do you see any difference if you install software with real-time antivirus scanning disabled?

Another possibility is use System Restore and restore to a point in time before the problem update. Or a backup, if you have an appropriate one.

You might consider opening a tech support incident with Microsoft. I wouldn't bother with OEM tech support (HP, Toshiba etc.), they're pretty much useless, the "best" they can do is get you to restore it to its original factory condition which isn't what you want. If you don't have any free support incidents available (e.g. MSDN) you should still be able to get free support, my understanding and experience is anything caused by or related to Windows Updates is always free tech support from MS.
