We had the money for our kids set aside too, and we only had one income.
My two grandkids' parents are both well-paid professionals but can't possibly save enough to pay for a first rate school for both of them.
Beside the higher cost of schooling and living in general, one important difference today is that both the parents have to pay part of their health care premiums and both must contribute to a 401K. I never had to do either. My employers did that till I started my own business.
Anyone who does not go overboard- deserves to.
