I don't know. To me the demise of the USSR was fairly foreseeable, not a matter of diplomacy but the Soviets staying locked in an arms race with a richer country.

The Soviet Union lasted a little less than 75 years. Religious hatred in the Middle East has been going on for a couple thousand years.
