Still not quite sure you're doing the right thing. I tried to see a few possible cases where such a requirement was possible, and it all came down to "I wouldn't do it that way". If it was an accounting thing, then the negative amount should be on the other side - at least that's what the accountants taught me. If it's a negative debit, then it should be a credit. Unless it's a cancellation, in which case it must be negative. Showing it as positive is basically display of incorrect information.
If it's just that your users can't grasp the concept of negative numbers, then again I wouldn't do it that way... I'd try to find a way away from them :).
