If it was an accounting thing, then the negative amount should be on the other side - at least that's what the accountants taught me. If it's a negative debit, then it should be a credit. Unless it's a cancellation, in which case it must be negative. Showing it as positive is basically display of incorrect information.

It is for an accounting module, but not for a debit or credit column. Instead it is for a Budget column and the negative numbers are confusing in this column (in addition to the fact the users are use to it since 1988).
I fully agree on the Debit and Credit sides.
